ENGINEERS OF THE FUTURE
STEM Summer Camp for kids in Puerto Rico
In September of 2017, I witnessed Puerto Rico undergo a long overdue test with Hurricane Maria that caused the already vulnerable power grid to completely collapse, leaving much of the island uncommunicated for weeks. Feeling a need to contribute even a small solution, I co-created a hands-on engineering summer camp in partnership with the Synergia community program in Puerto Rico to engage young students to want to pursue careers in STEM. With a hundred-foot extension cord routed to the abandoned school which housed our program, we taught children the basics of engineering and how to use simple materials to prototype robots, electric cars, wind turbines, satellite models, and bottle rockets.
